When culture reporter Sam Mondros published a story about thousands of unattributed photos of 1960s San Francisco, we heard from readers all over the city. Now we are bringing his story to life by exhibiting a collection of these extraordinary photos for the first time.
In the early 1980s, a plastic garbage bag in an abandoned storage locker contained a secret treasure trove: over 8,000 photos of San Francisco counterculture. From an early Grateful Dead show in the panhandle, to Vietnam protests, to an American Nazi Party rally outside City Hall, to the 1967 Summer of Love, the collection captures a seminal moment in San Francisco.
The photographer remains unknown, and most of the photos have gone unseen — until now.
Join researcher and nonprofit director Bill Delzell and the Standard's Sam Mondros for a private reception exploring a time capsule that still feels relevant today.
