Jota Mombaça: THE SINKING SHIP/PROSPERITY at KADIST San Francisco continues a cycle of work that explores the restless, elemental properties of water through a solo exhibition of sound, installation, performance, poetry, and video works. The works by Mombaça evoke Transatlantic histories and queer mourning as well as a prescient sense of how current patterns of consumption might have affected people and exhausted the planet in the years to come. In these performance works, the artist engages with a diverse set of sculptural materials, such as blue light, rope, sand, salt blocks, and textiles, that flow from their poetry and installation practices. In their most recent performance, Mombaça and two collaborators engaged in chorus—a polyphonic articulation seemingly in search of a rhythm that included poems written by the artist and excerpts of texts by Éduoard Glissant and other diasporic thinkers—forming a choreography of bodies entangling lengths of cotton fabric that had been submerged in the surrounding lagoon, their movement culminating in an urgent message: “The water is coming.” Open Wed-Sat 12pm - 5pm
